INTRODUCTION

The Indigenous Screen Office and the National Film Board have partnered to create an exciting opportunity for two aspiring Indigenous producers to work with Immersive and Interactive projects. One placement is available in each of the NFB interactive studios (Vancouver and Montreal), one in English and one in French.

This pilot program will offer opportunities to Indigenous producers who are interested in producing for immersive and interactive formats. The Producer Fellow will have the opportunity to work with existing interactive projects at the NFB that may include VR, XR, AI and games as well as identify potential projects suitable for development. The fellow will work closely with NFB producers and immersive/interactive storytellers.

PROGRAM ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA

Please note the spirit and intent of ISO funding is to support Indigenous creators and companies that are controlled by Indigenous people, who have decision-making authority and creative control.

For the purposes of ISO programs, “Indigenous” is defined as status and non-status First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples of Canada. All applicants must be residents of Canada.

This opportunity is available to:

  • First Nations, Inuit and Métis producers residing in Canada;
  • Must have experience working in the field, either as a linear content producer with a minimum of 2 credits, or in a production-related capacity in digital media;
  • Must have computer and access to internet;

PROGRAM ACTIVITIES

The program is anticipated to run from approximately April to October, 2023, and will be approximately 24 hours per work. The work schedule is flexible and most work will be done remotely, although some travel to the studios will be included as part of this opportunity.

The fellow will work closely with a producer from NFB on current interactive projects. An English-language placement will be led by staff in the Vancouver office and a French-language placement will be led in the Montreal office . The placement will be done remotely with some in-person orientation and training opportunities available.

The Fellow will assist in areas such as but not limited to:

  • develop and produce digital projects in accordance with Studio priorities;
  • cultivate relationships with accomplished and emerging talent;
  • manages all creative, administrative and technical stages of production and post-production for a portfolio of projects;
  • builds relationships with industry and cultural partners and seeks other funding sources, as required.

The Fellow will be expected to travel to the Montreal and Vancouver NFB offices at least twice and there may be travel associated with specific projects they are working on. Travel costs will be covered by the ISO and NFB.

FEES

The producer fellow will receive a monthly fee for the duration of the six-month placement for a total of $25,000 (this is separate from any additional travel requirements).

  • Applicant CV and bio
  • One-page cover letter outlining your experience in producing and/or digital media, why you are interested in this opportunity, and how it will benefit your career goals and professional development;
  • Links to screen-based projects or work and your role on the project.

FUNDING PROCESS AND PRIORITIES

  • This program will be assessed by a review committee made up of representatives from NFB and the ISO;
  • The review criteria will be based on the:
    • Impact, including the advancement of the applicant’s career within Indigenous storytelling and possible enrichment of the cultural life of relational community(ies) or contribution to the Indigenous Screen Sector.

GENERAL CRITERIA

All applicants to ISO programs must confirm they have read the General Funding Guidelines prior to submitting a grant.

ELIGIBILITY REVIEW

An initial review for eligibility and missing documentation will be conducted by the ISO Program Manager. The program manager will reach out if any further information is needed and applicants will be given a short period (maximum 10 business days) to submit anything outstanding.

*Ineligible or incomplete applications can be withdrawn at any time in the process. Applicants will be notified by the ISO when an application is withdrawn.

MISREPRESENTATION

If at any time, an Applicant, as required by the Criteria or as requested by the ISO, provides false information or omits or misrepresents material information in connection with an application, including with respect to Indigenous identity, such provision of false information, omission or misrepresentation will be considered an event of default and the ISO may exercise the following contractual rights:

  • termination of any contracts, including any remedies thereunder;
  • denial of eligibility for existing and future funding;
  • repayment of any funds already advanced; and
  • civil and potential criminal prosecution, in the case of fraud.

These measures may be imposed not only on the Applicant but also on related, associated and affiliated companies and individuals that are parties to the application. Any Applicant receiving approval for funding will be required to sign a legally enforceable agreement, which includes provisions concerning misrepresentations, defaults, and related matters.

FINAL REPORTING

A final report will be required within three months following the completion of the program. Applicants with overdue final reports will not be eligible for ISO funding until the report is submitted and approved.
