Accounting / Finance Manager
The Accounting / Finance Manager oversees and manages the accounting processes and delivers general accounting and financial reporting functions for the organization. The incumbent ensures the accurate and timely preparation of financial information, including month-end, quarter-end, and year-end closings. The role is responsible for implementation and maintenance of accounting policies, procedures and systems, including the financial database, making recommendations for sustainable processes improvements. The Accounting / Finance Manager assists with financial planning, budgeting and reporting processes, and takes on special projects as required.
- Perform the day-to-day accounting functions: accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll/benefits and general accounting transactions;
- Establish and achieve deadlines by scheduling and prioritizing workflow; coordinating daily, monthly, quarterly, periodic and annual accounting deadlines; planning for the year-end audits;
- Maintain the integrity of financial data by assuming financial database management responsibility, including maintaining system security and configuration; maintaining financial report format maintenance, coordinating software needs analysis, implementation, upgrades, and conversions;
- Collaborate with staff as required, to ensure integrity of financial information by maintaining knowledge of and providing guidance on financial aspects of databases/systems used in those departments and advising on other financial aspects of departmental operations, identifying and implementing process efficiencies;
- Work alongside the Managing Director in financial planning, reporting, monitoring and forecasting processes with annual operating budgets and quarterly year-end projections, preparing financial reports and analysis, including cash flow, and other special project/grant budgeting and reporting processes as required;
- Analyze and present financial reports in an accurate and timely manner; clearly communicate monthly and annual financial statements; collate financial reporting materials for all funding segments, and oversee all financial, project/program and grants accounting;
- Coordinate and lead the annual audit process and liaise with external auditors as required;
- Oversee proper filings of tax returns and ensure legal and regulatory compliance in all jurisdictions;
- Manage organizational cash flow, forecasting and asset management;
- Process payroll as per federal and provincial compliance requirements;
- Effectively communicate and present the critical financial matters to the Board of Directors;
- Maintain professional and technical knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles, payroll legislation, non-profit tax legislation etc. by keeping abreast of changes to legislation, reviewing professional publications etc.
Skills and Experience
- Completion or near completion of the CPA Designation (CA, CMA or CGA)
- Minimum 5 years’ accounting experience in the not-for-profit sector.
- Experience in gathering data, compiling the proper information, and preparing financial reports.
- Experience creating budgets and reports for government grants.
- Experience processing payroll.
- Experience working with Indigenous communities or an in-depth knowledge of Indigenous governance, administration and policy issues through lived or learned experience.
- Superior knowledge of Microsoft Office, specifically Excel, including advanced formulas, pivot tables and macros;
- Exceptional knowledge of Quickbooks;
- Hands on experience with Wagepoint or a comparable payroll system;
- Knowledge of operating and capital budget concepts;
- Extensive knowledge of financial database management;
- Knowledge of accounting in accordance with Canadian Generally Accepted Accounting Principles;
- A strong understanding of the legal, fiscal and regulatory environment in which non-profit organizations operate;
- Advanced awareness of payroll and benefits administration and experience with automated payroll systems;
- Strong technical aptitude, able to learn new platforms and tools;
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills;
- Ability to translate financial concepts to colleagues who do not necessarily have finance backgrounds;
- Demonstrated ability to handle multiple priorities and be self-motivated in a high pressure and demanding work environment;
- Strong interpersonal and relationship management skills with the ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with diverse cultural groups and artists;
- Ability to work independently using an above average level of initiative;
- Must possess a high level of moral judgment for handling confidential information and monetary transactions;
- Exemplary attention to detail with excellent planning, organizational and time management skills;
- Ability to contribute to building and being a part of a positive culture;
- Ability to work flexible hours including evenings and weekends as required.
